As you will no doubt be aware the covid-19 vaccination programme is likely to start very soon with the approval today of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, and others in the pipeline.
There is a service specification for community pharmacy, and Community Pharmacy Essex/Essex LPC has presented a webinar on this: It is not likely that community pharmacies will meet the specifications or be commissioned to deliver services in the immediate future, although this may change as different vaccine storage and administration characteristics come on line.
Meanwhile we have some concern that non-commissioned services will be further displaced to community pharmacy from GP practices: We have been asked to quantify how much this is happening now with a view to at least some short-term local commissioning in order to meet patient need.
With that in mind we would like you to let us know if you have had requests from practices or patients that you provide the following free of charge since March of this year (ie since the first lockdown.)
• Taking blood pressure
• Weight measurement/BMI calculation
• Repeat prescription management/emergency supplies NOT sent through NHS111 CPCS
• Triage, screening or diagnosis NOT through CPCS (eg checking rashes)
• Any other services that are NOT in the community pharmacy contractual framework (please state)
Please could you reply before Monday 7th December to firstname.lastname@example.org so that we can collate responses: The more of you respond, the more likely it is that services will be commissioned 😊
